“My Big Step Up” (MBSU) is Romparoo’s Preschool Alternative program that we developed in 2006, in consultation with Early Childhood Educators. We have been offering this program, from September – June, continuously for the last decade.
Our philosophy in creating this program was to design a curriculum that provided learning and fun in an age-appropriate way, for children as young as 2 ½ years.
Our 40-week program is taught in weekly themes that both appeal to children’s interests, as well as introduce them to the world around them. Weekly themes include such topics as Transportation, Farm Animals, Under the Sea, Community Helpers, et cetera; other basic concepts that we explore include numbers/counting, letters, colors, and shapes.
By approaching learning through a multisensory play experience, children are able to learn basic concepts easily and joyfully. Our multisensory play approach includes activities such as singing, making art, engaging in creative movement, playing games, putting together (and taking apart!) puzzles, imaginative play, and reading stories. The variety of activities we employ encourage both gross motor and fine motor development.
We also believe that no program for young children would be complete without learning important social skills such as playing with others one-on-one, playing in a group, independent play, sharing, manners, using receptive language (listening skills!) and expressive language (verbal expression/verbal reactions), and how to react nonverbally when we feel angry, sad, frustrated, or happy!
And we believe that the more interactive we can make each class, and the more we can stimulate each child’s imagination, the more we can aid in their cognitive development, and the more fun we can contribute to their lives.
MBSU runs Monday-Friday from 9-12 with only 5 spaces available in each 3-hour class. We offer additional 2-hour spaces (for children as young as 2 years) on Monday-Friday from 9-11.
